Better Than Takeout: Crockpot Beef and Broccoli

You know that craving.

It hits on a Tuesday evening, or a rainy Sunday afternoon, or right after a long week when the last thing you want to do is cook a complicated meal. It's the craving for something warm, saucy, savory, and deeply satisfying — the kind of craving that usually ends with a takeout order and a side of bloating you didn't ask for.

Traditional beef and broccoli from your favorite Chinese restaurant is built on a sauce made with soy sauce (a common gut irritant for many people), cornstarch, refined sugar, and often MSG. The beef is typically cooked in seed oils at extremely high heat. And by the time it arrives at your door, it has been sitting in a container long enough for the broccoli to go limp and the sauce to congeal.

This version is better. In every single way.

This Crockpot Beef & Broccoli uses coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, arrowroot starch instead of cornstarch, raw honey instead of refined sugar, and fresh ginger and garlic instead of flavor packets. The slow cooker does all the work — you spend about 10 minutes of active prep time and come back to a kitchen that smells incredible and a dinner that is ready to serve.

It is the definition of a set-it-and-forget-it gut-friendly meal. And it tastes so good, you will genuinely stop missing the takeout version.

Crockpot Beef & Broccoli

Serves: 4–6 | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 3–4 hours on High or 6–8 hours on Low

Gluten-Free · Dairy-Free · Soy-Free · Anti-Inflammatory

Ingredients

For the Beef:

  • 2 lbs flank steak or flat iron steak, sliced thinly against the grain into ¼-inch strips
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch (for coating the beef before cooking)
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Sauce:

  • ½ cup coconut aminos
  • 3 tablespoons raw honey (or pure maple syrup)
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated (approximately a 1-inch piece)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (unseasoned, no sugar added)
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce (optional — adds depth; omit for vegan)
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to heat preference)
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch (for thickening the sauce at the end)
  • 3 tablespoons cold water (to dissolve the arrowroot slurry)

For the Broccoli & Serving:

  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets (approximately 1 large head)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • Cauliflower rice or white jasmine rice for serving

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, toss the sliced beef with arrowroot starch, sea salt, and black pepper until evenly coated. This light coating helps the beef develop a slightly silkier texture in the slow cooker.

2.In a separate bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the coconut aminos, raw honey, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, fish sauce (if using), and red pepper flakes until well combined.

3.Place the coated beef in the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour the sauce over the beef and stir gently to coat.

4.Cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6–8 hours, until the beef is tender and cooked through.

5.About 30 minutes before serving, add the broccoli florets on top of the beef. Replace the lid and continue cooking until the broccoli is bright green and just tender — you want it to still have a slight bite, not be mushy.

6.In a small bowl, whisk together the arrowroot starch and cold water until smooth to create a slurry. Stir the slurry into the slow cooker and replace the lid for 10–15 minutes. The sauce will thicken as it continues to cook.

7.Taste and adjust seasoning — add more coconut aminos for saltiness, more honey for sweetness, or more red pepper flakes for heat.

8.Serve over cauliflower rice or jasmine rice. Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds.

Make It Ahead & Meal Prep Tips

  • Prep the beef the night before
    • Slice and coat the beef with arrowroot starch, salt, and pepper, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add it to the slow cooker with the sauce and set it on Low before you leave for the day.
  • Meal prep for the week
    • This recipe makes 4–6 servings and stores beautifully. Keep the beef and sauce in one container and the broccoli separate (to prevent it from getting soggy), then combine when reheating. Stored this way, it keeps in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer-friendly
    • The beef and sauce (without the broccoli) freeze well for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, reheat gently on the stovetop, and add fresh broccoli when warming through.
